Final Reflection

Learning in a cosy classroom for these past twelve weeks with the extremely-dedicated Ms Goh and interesting classmates has been absolutely rewarding. I appreciate their useful comments and will definitely put them to good use.

I have become more self-conscious and sensitive to people’s facial expressions, gestures and non-verbal cues while communicating. I hope I can portray my confidence and sincerity, which all remain to be polished, to people in various future circumstances.

The 7Cs taught have become entrenched in my academic writing, as I find myself focusing on these areas during self and peer editing. The weekly blogging has allowed us to express our thoughts critically while observing the 7Cs and appropriateness in commenting on other posts.

However, instead of scheduling it in a time when everyone is busy with their reports, I feel that more about job resume and application letter can be taught. They are important to most individuals, because employers may make decisions based on applicants’ resumes, without a need for photographs. It would be good if everyone gets a chance to experience being interviewed too.

Doing the survey research report has been extremely humbling and emotionally-straining but has trained my organizational and conflict-solving skills. I would like to thank Beatrice and Kent for their great effort, tolerance and assistance in making me realise the importance of being an efficient team player.

The long hours spent doing seemingly-mundane work have brought bountiful benefits that have yet to be fully explored…

Open Topic (Blog Post #5)


I went on a summer programme (ATW) in Japana's Kyūshu University (Kyūdai) in June 2008 and almost half of the 64 exchange students were from Singapore.

One of the Singaporeans, Eve, and a younger American, Adam, gradually became a couple as they lived in the same dormitory. As ATW was only for six weeks, they decided to spend as much time together as possible before they went back to their own countries.

We met June, an outgoing NUS student on a 10-month exchange programme (JTW) at Kyūdai. Since she had hardly met any Singaporean, she invited all Singaporean students to her dormitory for dinner on a Saturday night. Eve brought Adam along, without informing June, whom she thought would not mind. Honestly, some of us were quite surprised, as June had really meant it to be an "all-Singaporean gathering" to let June feel at home, but everyone was sensitive enough to not say anything. I was worried if Adam would feel left-out as we spoke in Singlish and mingled extremely well with June, although we knew her for a shorter time than we knew him. He was very receptive, but remained quiet most of the time and seemed to enjoy our chattings.

June had only seen Adam briefly in school but did not know him at all and did not interact much with him that night. When we ran out of food, Adam volunteered to buy some from a nearby supermarket, with Eve and other Singaporean boys. I guess he realised that he had to contribute as he was not one of us.

When we returned to our dormitories, June chatted with me online and confessed that she felt uneasy from not being informed beforehand. Also, although she had made some close American friends from JTW, she had met some who were racist against Asians. As I lived in the same dormitory as Adam, I explained that I understand her feelings but Adam was an accommodating person, as he was, after all, half-Japanese. I urged her to get to know Adam more if she had the chance, and since then, they would chat with each other whenever they met in school.

What should Eve, June or even Adam have done initially to prevent the unspoken tension? Even though they did not express their discomfort explicitly, their actions did reveal some lessons to be learned.

Sok Huang's Biodata (Blog Post #6)


I am Teo Sok Huang, a Third-Year undergraduate from the National University of Singapore, majoring in Life Sciences with concentration in Biomedical Science.

My university education has matured me in many ways. I have done painting projects in children’s homes and those for the intellectually-disabled. These have developed my compassion towards the underprivileged. Additionally, as a Spirit of Enterprise Awards student interviewer, I have built up my courage in taking the initiative to approach and communicate clearly with entrepreneurs from various industries.

Studying for the degree has made me more disciplined, analytical and driven. Together with my passion, the flexibility of being able to read core modules with elective modules on complementary and alternative medicine and human nutrition has been enjoyable. A six-week summer programme at Kyushu University in Japan in 2008 also allowed me to meet peers and educators from 13 countries, develop independence and enhance inter-cultural communication.

I have known more about the operations of the healthcare industry while working as a dental assistant for six months. Furthermore, having worked as a Patient Relations Assistant in Singapore General Hospital for three months, I have become more acutely aware of the needs of patients and their families. Short administrative stints, dealing with inventory and enrolment records, have also raised my meticulousness, computer literacy and time management. I believe that these skills are truly critical in almost every job.

I hope my diverse professional, academic, social experiences and knowledge will contribute to my future undertakings in the health sciences industry.

Evaluating Cultural Behaviour (Blog Post #4)


Amy, an American, met her Japanese ex-husband Kouhei in university. They decided to get married in Kouhei’s hometown, Kyushu, Japan, after graduation, bringing along Amy’s parents who had not visited Japan. Kouhei had hardly mentioned anything about Japan and Amy had only met his parents a few times as they had to work in Osaka. Nevertheless they appeared to get along well with each other although Amy was often quiet due to language barriers.

When Amy saw her in-laws at the marriage registration, she dashed over to hug them and shouted their names, “Hi Makiyo, hi Takeshi!” Kouhei, upon sensing his traditional parents' displeasure, immediately whispered to Amy to bow and restrain her excitement.

During lunch when everyone tucked into their ramen, Amy's side was shocked by the loud slurps Kouhei's side made. The Americans saw it as impolite and noisy while the Japanese viewed it as polite, an expression of enjoyment and a way of cooling the hot ramen. Amy’s in-laws then offered her the mentaiko (fish roe) sushi. As Amy is worried that she would get diarrhea from consuming raw food, she waved her hand and said, “No, worry.” Her in-laws heard it as “warui” (bad) and misinterpreted it as an insult. Amy’s side often picked food up by piercing through with the chopsticks which they were inept in, talked and laughed loudly while eating and pointed the chopsticks at the Japanese. After all, they usually did these with their knives and forks but the in-laws considered them as disrespectful.

The next six months of living together were not amicable for both families due to the vast differences in cultures and practices. Eventually, Amy and Kouhei divorced, which was probably the only common thing between the two societies.

I feel that Kouhei should have told Amy more about the traditional Japanese customs to prepare her for meetings with his conservative parents. This would be fair to a foreigner like Amy ("kouhei" actually means justice.) Also, Amy and her parents should have also done some research before moving to Japan to avoid any blunders. If both sides had taken time to try to understand each other's backgrounds, their intercultural communication skills would have been enhanced and the split could have been prevented too.

This grammatically-sound letter has words like “for your reference” and “should you need”, showing that American Insurance Group (AIG) is trying to build rapport with its customers, who would also feel that AIG is giving them significant attention.

Some important points have been underlined and boldfaced so that readers can immediately notice them upon opening the letter. A little background about an initiative was explained such that commitment to customers was expressed. This letter, with specific information, like technicalities and dates, has an overall good flow. It ended off pleasantly with AIG’s apologies and Customer Service hotline.

However, some changes can be made by AIG to show more sincerity, since it is also conveying its apologies.

Firstly, the recipient’s courtesy title and last name can be used in the name and salutation, respectively, like “Ms Khoo” in this instance. Secondly, “technical fault” would be a better substitute for “glitch” to make the letter sound more professional. Lastly, neither the name and designation nor a signature of any person-in-charge was included at the end of the letter. A person of some rank should authorize this letter to acknowledge AIG’s mistake, or else it would just look like a mere information letter.

Resolving Interpersonal Conflict

Mary, 80, lives alone as she used to argue frequently with her son-in-law, John, and wants to avoid making things difficult for her daughter, Ling. You are a counsellor who Mary confides in as both of you got closer from weekly church services.

Ling only visits Mary once weekly to send her groceries and allowances. Ling and John usually go for holidays without Mary, even on Chinese New Year, and would ask their relatives to help Mary buy her necessities.

Recently, Mary’s doctor has advised Mary to remove her eye cataracts or she may lose her sight. As Ling thinks that no one would be free to keep attending to Mary after the surgery, she decided to withdraw Mary from the operation. However, Mary wants to undergo the surgery so that she can see better, as her hearing is failing, and be more independent. Her friends and sisters who had undergone the surgery also support her. However, Ling has been very discouraging and repeatedly insists that it would be very troublesome if the operation is not expectedly successful. They argued more and Mary begins to question the filial piety Ling has towards her. You tried to talk to Ling but she was stubborn and refused to let an outsider interfere with her family matters.

As Ling would be the one paying the surgery bills, Mary has no choice but to reluctantly agree to withdraw from the surgery. As a professional counsellor, how would you help Mary solve her dilemma?

Why developing effective communication skills is important to me

Interpersonal communication is integral to most parts of our lives. It is crucial to get my intentions conveyed across without being misconstrued. Also, both the speaker and listener have to be active listeners to show respect, avoid conflicts and help clarify matters.

In close relationships with family or friends, effective communication skills are indispensable. It would be of great relief to them that there will always be a listening ear to their troubles and someone to provide consolation, suggestions or criticism. To achieve that, I have to try to be empathetic to further assist and understand them.

In addition, I also get to interact with peers of different thoughts and capabilities through classes and student activities in school. They may be strangers but through wise interpersonal and cultural communication, we can be bonded and do our projects well to benefit everyone. Progressively, we can learn from one another in many academic and social aspects.

Research has shown that 55% of our intended message is expressed through body language, 38% through vocal tones and only 7% verbally. Therefore, skills pertinent to a more relaxed and cooperative working life would entail the appropriate use of nonverbal gestures, sensitive management of interpersonal communication and active listening. Besides giving me attention during presentations and discussions, my colleagues would also be able to build their trust and confidence in me.

Different verbal and nonverbal techniques are essential to maintaining and building enjoyable relationships as I acquaint with more people of varied ages and backgrounds.
